Sunday was a scorching day that deserved a thrilling game of cricket, the Rotherwick and Ramsdell boys didn’t disappoint. Howard Bradley won the toss for Ramsdell and to the disappoint of the Rotherwick boys he chose to bat first. The veteran Andrews and Monger opened up for the Rams and eased the score along with Hussain and Turnbull bowling tidily. Terry was brought into the attack at the expense of Hussain and the total reached 23 before a sprawling catch low to his right at slip by Swift off of Terry, it was a change of luck for the bowler as he had already had catches dropped by Hussain and Culver. Turnbull then had Bradley trapped allegedly in front and given out LBW but with fine leg running to his left the fielders were less sure!!! Turnbull finished with the tight figures 9-3-12-1. Cave joined the innings and steadied the ship compiling an innings best 40. Terry continued his fine spell removing the other opener Monger and finishing with figures of 8–2–34-2. Culver came into the attack for his first bowl of the summer and snapped up the wicket of Bailey finishing with figures of 8-0-27-1. Cordery and the returning Hussain had the task of bowling at the death and other than a brief swish by Mark Morley hiding at No.10 along with Cave’s 40 the innings finished on what looked like a gettable total. Hussain finishing with figures of 10-4-18-1 including his first wicket for the club and Cordery finished a decent weekend’s work with figures of 9-2-22-2 leaving Ramsdell with a total of 140-8. Rotherwick ITW rolled back the years to the ITW days by opening up with Dave Phillips, the returning ‘prodigal son’ (his words not mine haha!!!), and Graham Hooper the pair are both veterans of almost 30 years for both ITW and Rotherwick ITW cricket club’s. The veteran pair started strongly in chasing down this total. With Andrews’ fellow veteran Morley opening the bowling with his young apprentice Porter at the other end. The score moved effortlessly along for many of the early overs into what looked like a commanding position until the introduction Cave and Andrews, trying to make amends for his batting flop. Andrews quickly removed Hooper for 30 in a stunningly quick decision by umpire Culver (a bowler, who would have guessed!!) Monger than removed the hard hitting Appleton for a quick 14 with a high full toss that looked suspiciously like a no ball before diving down to hit the top of the stumps. Andrews followed up with the removal of Swift bowled off inside edge and pad for 0 the second almost identical dismissal of a dismal weekend. Gareth Cloutt joined Phillips and looked to be seeing Rotherwick ITW through to victory. Needing just 12 from the final 3 overs of the innings with 7 wickets in hand it seemed harder to avoid victory than to get across the line. Morley returned to the attack but with five taken from his over that only left 7 required off of the final 2 overs. Andrews’ over was taken for 4 runs to bring the match to its climax. Morley began his last over with Rotherwick ITW needing 3 for victory and only 3 wickets down. Phillips took a single off the first ball of the over and Rotherwick ITW edged closer, a dot ball followed before Cloutt was bowled off of the third ball of the over for 23. Josh Terry came to the wicket and was bowled first ball for 0 as the target remained two runs away. Cordery joined Phillips at the wicket, facing a hat trick ball, still needing two for victory in the final two balls of the innings. Morley bowled his hat trick ball to Cordery who struck it airborne to cover, a diving catch was unsuccessful and the hat trick was denied, as the batsmen scampered through for a single the scores were level with the final ball of the innings remaining. Phillips faced the final ball looking to score the winning run and see Rotherwick ITW through to victory and remain undefeated. Morley bowled the final ball of the innings outside off stump as Phillips advanced. The ball sliced off of Philips’ bat and flew to Andrews at slip who safely pouched the chance and the match ended in a tie. A great game of cricket as Rotherwick ITW Sunday team didn’t managed the win but continued on their undefeated season
