Following Rotherwick ITW’s devastating win the previous Saturday they were to come down to earth with a bump during this week’s match against Littleton & Westhill. Missing key players including last week’s bowling hero Neil Payne and dashing opening batsman Jonny Orange was to prove a bridge too far. The day started well with skipper Buckingham winning the toss and using his tried and tested method requested that the visitors bat first. Without his fellow opening partner it was left to Swift to open the bowling with Adam Cordery. Things started promisingly with the runs kept to a minimum leading up to Swift taking the first wicket of the innings in the seventh over with the score on 14. Cordery (10-0-34-1) was next to strike but not before Littleton had move the score along to 52, the visitors never really got into full scoring stride but still managed to keep the scoreboard moving and edging up towards a decent total. Skeats was introduced into the attack to see if his wily spin could do the trick and crack open the heart of the visitors batting line up, he did make a dent into it by taking a wicket with a sliding catch by Swift in the deep finishing with figures of 10-0-44-1 in his first outing of the summer. Paul ‘Grizzly’ Adams was the next to have a crack at the Littleton line up, he broke through in his fourth over forcing an edge that was pouched by Steve Guye behind the stumps, his third catch of the innings. Adams ended with figures of 7-0-30-1. Turnbull and Swift were left with the task of bowling at the death. They managed to keep the visitors down to a reasonable total of 179 for 9, Swift ending with figures of 12-2-42-2 and Turnbull 6-0-26-2. On a pretty good pitch, though a damp outfield, both teams were satisfied that a decent performance after tea could see them through to victory. Sadly for the home team it was the visitors that were the stronger in the second half of the game. Giving the home batsmen very few poor deliveries they never let the chase get up a head of steam. The home response was started by Buckingham and Guye who moved the score along to 24 before Guye lost his wicket for 9. A nine over stand in which Swift, who had joined Buckingham, scored only 4 before being bowled off of his pads was typical of the tightness of the Littleton bowling. Buckingham and Adams took the total passed 50 and on to 53 before the skipper lost his wicket for a battling 27. Adams then fought doggedly on as the middle order crumbled around him as in turn Paul Appleton (1), Shaun Appleton (8), Kyle Frost (0) and Graham Hooper (first ball 0) came and went in quick time reducing the home team to 65 for 7. Cordery joined Adams and belligerently went about giving the total an air of respectability. Cordery bludgeoned 22 and improve the Rotherwick total to 100 before a freak dismissal left him wandering dejectedly back to the pavilion. Adams was facing and was bowled a no ball by the visiting bowler, he hit the no ball straight to mid wicket and was caught. With the no ball negating the dismissal the quick thinking fielder threw down the stumps at the non strikers end leaving the bewildered Cordery short of his ground and dismissed in unconventional circumstances to say the least. Adams lengthy vigil came to an end as he was dismissed for 16, with Skeats falling for 4 shortly afterwards and Turnbull not out on 4 the home team amassed a disappointing 114 all out.
